In 2019, his work Crown of the Continent will be played by the Athens Philharmonia on their tour throughout China.
Over the past decade, Stephen has focused increasingly on his work as an adventurer-composer. His passion for wilderness and outdoor pursuits has led to a sizable series of works about the national parks of the US. He has served as Artist-in-Residence at Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Denali, Glacier Bay, and Gates of the Arctic National Parks, and has written over fifteen park-related pieces that have been premiered in such places as Texas, Alaska, Sydney, and Taiwan. His orchestral work All the Songs that Nature Sings was commissioned by the Boulder Philharmonic with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and performed at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center as part of the 2017 SHIFT Festival of American Orchestras. He is the founder and leader of the annual "Composing in the Wilderness" field seminar offered jointly by the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival and Alaska Geographic.
As a professor of composition at Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX), Dr. Lias strives to lead his composition students to genuine and artistic musical expression, while incorporating a strong emphasis on contemporary media and cross-disciplinary collaboration. His students have been commissioned and published, scored films, games, and theatre, and are the recipients of regional, national, and international awards.
