Biography

John Simon trained as an economist, before studying composition at Trinity College of Music and the Royal College of Music in London. His orchestral output includes a symphony, two piano concertos, a violin concerto, a soprano song cycle ‘Portrait of Emily’, two symphonic suites and his ‘Requiem for Orchestra’. His piano music includes five sonatas and two sonatinas; his vocal music consists of song cycles and choral settings of various poets, while his most significant chamber works are his string quartet and wind quintet.
His music has been played, recorded and broadcast in many countries, and includes performances with all of South Africa’s major orchestras (from 1983).
