Biography

Chun-hay SHING identifies creativity for its power to inspire new perception of music, of art and of life. His works, often embodying his personal reflections and literary inspirations, have travelled across continents, performed by eminent musicians in Asia, Europe and North America, and have received broadcast by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and RadioCEMAT (Italy).

Most recently in August, his xi sang for mixed choir a cappella was premiered in the Taipei International Choral Competition 2018. Some other highlights of performances of his music include those featured on the stage of the Esplanade in Singapore Asian Composers Festival; for the first anniversary of the opening of the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea; and in the Asian Music Festival 2017 in Tokyo (an Asian Composers League Special Event), where he premiered his own work as a conductor.

As a composer, he has worked with many musicians in his native Hong Kong community, such as pianist Mary Wu, the Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, among others; as well as with musicians overseas, including the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra (Taiwan), Ensemble Kochi (Japan), and Juventas New Music Ensemble (Boston, USA).

His accolades include the First Prize in New Generations 2015 (organised by the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild in association with RTHK Radio 4), David Gwilt Composition Prize, the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Scholarship, and Talent Development Scholarship from the government of Hong Kong. Alea Publishing and Recording has published his Moon over the West River, for clarinet and piano.
Since Shing started composing in secondary school junior, composition has remained one of his main musical interests. Currently he is furthering his composition study, pursuing a Doctor of Music degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong under Professor Wendy Wan-ki Lee, supported by a full scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund.
