Ivičević, Mirela

Mirela Ivičević is a composer, sound artist and performer from Split, Croatia currently based in Austria. Her artistic work focuses mainly on the exploration of reflective and subversive potential of sound as a major as well as a supporting part of the concept. Her sonic fiction uses bits and pieces of reality, abducted from their natural environment into a surreal acoustic world where they are striped naked, questioned, played with, laughed at, order to create alternative experiences which would help to better understand or transform their real-world origin. The themes of her work are predominantly issues of identity, otherness, physical and mental freedom and challenges they face in contemporary social environments, especially in those she has been part of. The result is a patchwork of abruptly exchanging, hyperactive structures, distorted occurrences of south-slavic reality, blocks of noise and traces of trip-hop. Mirela finished her master studies in composition at the Music Academy Zagreb, postgraduate studies in Media composition at the MDW and is currently doing a postgraduate course in composition with Beat Furrer at the Kunstuniversität Graz.
